About Bigbury-on-Sea

A holiday in Bigbury on Sea is a beach lover's dream! This stylish seaside village sits right on the edge of the golden sands of Bigbury beach. With soft sand perfect for sandcastles, seasonal lifeguard cover and toilet and shower facilities, this beautiful beach is very popular with families. During calm, balmy summer days, the sea is filled with swimmers, kayakers and stand up paddle boarders, but when the swell picks up, Bigbury is a haven for surfers. Whether you're a total novice or a seasoned pro, you can hire equipment and book lessons with Discovery Surf School.

Bigbury on Sea is perhaps best known for the iconic Burgh Island. During low tide, a sandy causeway leads to the island, home to the famous art deco Burgh Island Hotel, the inspiration for Agatha Christie's classic crime thriller, Soldier Island. A must-do when on holiday in Bigbury is to climb to the top of Burgh Island and take in the spectacular views of Bigbury Bay, before heading to the Pilchard Inn for a well-deserved pint. This characterful beachside pub is over 700 years old and was once a popular smugglers haunt. But the real magic happens when the tide comes in and the island becomes cut off - it's then that the famous sea tractor starts up, ferrying passengers across the waves back to the beach.

If one beach isn't enough, you can pick up the South West Coast Path, which runs through the village, following the headlands to Challaborough, Ayrmer Cove and Wonwell beach, taking in stunning sea views along the way. Keen golfers will enjoy the 18-hole clifftop course at Bigbury Golf Club, which boasts far reaching coastal views.

There's a handy shop in Bigbury on Sea, as well as the Venus Café, selling everything from breakfasts, burgers and baguettes, to ice creams, hot drinks and milkshakes. During the Easter and summer holidays, there's also a quirky beach-based coffee cart, Beach Barista, so you don't have to stroll far from your towel for refreshments.

A holiday in Bigbury places you right on the stunning South Devon coast, with easy access to the rest of the South Hams.
