Its steep streets are lined with wonky Elizabethan buildings, lively cafes and delis, and quirky independent shops, many of which sell ethical, fair trade and organic products. In fact, Totnes is home to the UK's only Zero Waste Shop. No holiday in Totnes would be complete without a rummage through the weekly Totnes market, selling everything from antiques and collectables, clothes and jewellery, to plants, local produce and tasty world foods. There's also a monthly Good Food Market, a must for any food-lover!

There's so much to see and do in Totnes, making it a great destination for a family holiday. Kids will love exploring Totnes Castle, an imposing Norman structure overlooking the town, and a ride on the steam train at the South Devon Railway is guaranteed to put a smile on their faces. Take to the water and explore the River Dart in a canoe or set sail on the Totnes to Dartmouth river cruise, taking in the pretty riverside village of Dittisham and Agatha Christie's former holiday home, Greenway.

A lively hub of arts, culture and music, Totnes is also home to lots of museums and art galleries, and strolling along the high street dipping in and out of them is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Nearby is Sharpham Vineyard, another beautiful place for a leisurely walk where you can also sample their delicious locally produced wine and cheese.

Surrounded by tumbling hills and ancient woodland, there are lots of countryside walks near Totnes. Dartington Hall Estate, just a couple of miles away, is a firm favourite. A short stroll around the gardens is beautiful any time of year, and if you'd prefer something a little more strenuous, there are nearly 900 acres to explore.
