About Bigbury

Bigbury is a small, pretty village surrounded by countryside, yet only a couple of miles from the stunning South Devon coast.

Holidays in Bigbury are best spent exploring the sweeping sands of Bigbury on Sea. Perfect for sandcastles, rock pooling and picnics, the beach at Bigbury on Sea is a popular spot for families. It's also one of the region's best surf spots, so why not hire a board or book a lesson with Discovery Surf School. At low tide, a sandy causeway leads to the iconic Burgh Island, home to the famous art deco Burgh Island Hotel where Agatha Christie was inspired to write several of her crime-thriller novels. There's also a tiny, 700 year old smuggler's pub, The Pilchard Inn, where you can stop for a drink whilst admiring the views of Bigbury Bay. As the tide draws in, hop aboard the legendary sea tractor to ferry you back to the beach.

Meanwhile, keen golfers can enjoy a game at the 18-hole links golf course just over a mile away from Bigbury village, whilst taking in the spectacular coastal views. There are a handful of fantastic places to eat near Bigbury, such as The Journey's End in the neighbouring village of Ringmore, and The Oyster Shack. Just over a mile away from the village down leafy country lanes, locals and visitors love this little restaurant for its laid back atmosphere and delicious, freshly caught seafood, so it's best to book in advance. There's a great village shop in St Anne's Chapel where you can stock up on holiday provisions.

Jump in the car for a short drive to the lively market town of Kingsbridge where you'll find an abundance of independent shops and cafes, as well as two supermarkets, pubs and restaurants. Bigbury is also well placed for exploring Salcombe, Dartmouth and the rest of the South Hams.
