About Bickerton

Set amongst rolling countryside, a quarter of a mile inland from Start Bay, a holiday in Bickerton offers you the best of both worlds. A small, picturesque hamlet, Bickerton is quiet and peaceful, yet several beautiful beaches and the South West Coast Path are an easy walk away.

North Hallsands is the nearest beach, a sweep of fine shingle popular with dog walkers, anglers and those looking for a peaceful day at the beach. It's here that you'll find the ghostly ruins of Hallsands village, swept away to sea during a storm in 1917.

The South West Coast Path runs through Hallsands, so you can spend your holiday exploring the many miles of breathtaking coastal walks. From Hallsands, it's an easy walk eastward to the neighbouring fishing village of Beesands, where you'll find a brilliant pub, The Cricket Inn, and beach-shack seafood restaurant, Britannia @ the Beach - both of which serve beautiful, fresh, locally caught fish and seasonal dishes. Continue another mile to Torcross and the impressive three-mile stretch of Slapton Sands for an ultimate day at the beach. Wildlife enthusiasts should head to Slapton Ley Nature Reserve, a large freshwater lake set just behind the beach, which is home to an abundance of rare species, including wildflowers, insects, birds and mammals.

For those who love the idea of discovering secret beaches, following the coast path westward from Hallsands will take you along a rugged stretch of coast to Start Point Lighthouse. The far-reaching views from the lighthouse are some of the most spectacular in South Devon, and a must-see for anyone on holiday in Start Bay. The beautiful, remote cove of Great Mattiscombe Sands is a short walk from here and is definitely worth the effort for its golden sands and clear waters.

Slightly further afield you will find the market town of Kingsbridge and historic port of Dartmouth, both an easy drive away and home to an abundance of shops, restaurants and things to do. From Bickterton, a 15-minute drive will take you to the golden beaches of East Portlemouth where you can catch the passenger ferry to the popular seaside resort of Salcombe.

Holidays in Bickerton offer a unique combination of easy access to all the things that make the South Hams so special, but completely removed from the hustle and bustle of the summer crowds.
