About Aveton Gifford

Aveton Gifford is a small village located at the head of the Avon estuary in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its Fore Street is lined with a mixture of pastel coloured cottages and newer houses, along with a village shop and large pub.

This tranquil stretch of the Avon is a popular spot for kayaking and SUP boarding when the tide allows, both of which you can hire from nearby Triocean Surf. The estuary is a haven for a variety of wildlife, attracting birdwatchers, photographers and artists alike. In fact, South Efford Marsh, a patchwork of saltmarsh and fields on the edge of the river, is one of the best birdwatching sites in South Devon where you'll often spot curlew, little egrets and more.

Follow the picturesque tidal road to the golden sands of Bigbury on Sea, five miles away, although make sure to check the tide tables before you set out as the road floods during high tide. You'll pass The Oyster Shack, an award-winning restaurant serving local oysters and fresh seafood. Its quirky, laid-back atmosphere and delicious food make it popular with both locals and visitors so it's best to book in advance.

A holiday in Aveton Gifford places you within easy reach of some of the region's best beaches. As well as Bigbury on Sea and the iconic Burgh Island, the soft sands of Bantham, Challaborough and Thurlestone are all within five miles. For a great selection of shops, supermarkets, pubs and restaurants, the pretty market town of Kingsbridge is an easy ten minute drive away, or head to Salcombe for stylish waterside restaurants and boutique shops, only fifteen minutes away.

A holiday in Aveton Gifford makes a great base for exploring the exceptional beaches and pretty villages of South Devon.
