About Torcross

A beach-lover's paradise, Torcross lies at the southern end of the three-mile stretch of Slapton Sands. This long shingle beach is a great place for swimming, fishing and a range of water sports. Slapton Sands also allows dogs on the beach all year round, making Torcross an ideal destination for a dog-friendly holiday.

Nature enthusiasts are drawn to the freshwater lake, Slapton Ley, a sanctuary for a diverse variety of wildlife. Separated from the sea by a narrow shingle bar, the Ley is the largest natural lake in the South West, and is a lovely place to walk around, keeping an eye out for birds, bats, otters and dormice.

With the South West Coast Path running through the village, Torcross is the perfect place for a walking holiday. Don your boots and follow the coastal path to the little fishing village of Beesands, or, if you're feeling energetic, continue to discover the historic remains of the lost village of Hallsands which was swept away to sea during dramatic storms in 1917. Carry on for another mile and you'll reach Start Point Lighthouse.

Torcross and the surrounding area is steeped in history. During World War II, Torcross and its neighbouring villages were evacuated to allow allied troops to practice the D-Day landings on Slapton Sands beach. Named 'Exercise Tiger', the operation ended in disaster and over 900 men tragically lost their lives. Today, you'll find a war memorial and an old Sherman Tank which was discovered at sea by a local diver.

The seaside village is home to a selection of popular beachside cafes and pubs - a holiday in Torcross wouldn't be complete without ordering a portion of takeaway fish and chips from the Start Bay Inn to tuck in to on the beach whilst watching the waves.

As Torcross is located on the main coastal road between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, both bustling riverside towns are easy to access. Here you can stock up on supplies from their supermarkets and shops, and enjoy an evening meal at one of the many restaurants.
